This is my first post to this list.
I've donwloaded the last source code of xmame and compiled it
successfully for both svgalib and X.
I prefer to run it for svgalib.
In my ~/.xmame/xmamerc I have a sym link for the ROMs:
That sym link points to the place where I have the ROMs for
run "xmame -showconfig | grep rompath" to verify that the rompath you set in
your xmamerc file is actually being set correctly.

I took a look at the error message you attached on your first e-mail and it
looks like your ROMs are not up to date with the latest versions. You will
have to go to mame.dk, create an account, and download the latest versions of
the ROMs you want to play. This should fix your problem.
