Yes, I confirm. I have the same problem...
I have tested with XFree 4.1 & 4.2 without success.
Apparently, Xmame/DRI-tdfx would be broken since XFree 4.1 because
xmame-doc.txt reports the following config ok :
* Vodoo3 + DRI OpenGL driver (XFree86 4.0.2), with command
line options "-noglaa" a

the XFX target is designed to work with glide2 i believe.. supported for
older XFree86 3.3.x targets where the glide2x->mesahack->device3dfx
system was in place that used dga to open a fullscreen and put the image
there.
in mandrake 8.1 you have XFree86 4.x. Just use the xgl target.
