rate, and/or turn interlacing on or off, and I'd like to do this with
C++. I've found plenty of websites with tutorials on how to do this
from the command line, but I haven't seen anything on how to directly

I currently cannot reproduce the problem :-(( , well it is also :-)) .
I am now with Xorg.conf without any of your proposed amendments, AGP 8x in BIOS
as well as AGP FastWrite enabled. On top, compositor is enabled as well.
Graphic speed seems quite ok for such old and lean system.
