This is possibly because the atom has been

My laptop has 2 video outputs: internal display (LVDS) and external VGA
(VGA) monitor (in fact it has also a TV output, which I don't use). It has
an Intel 855GM graphics chipset. In general, everything works fine, I can
manage both outputs using xrandr. But there is one thing, concerning XV
I know this is a bit off-topic, but it came recently to my mind:
Wouldn't it be possible to provide half-accelerated linear gradients
by simply rendering the gradient into a temporary 1x? surface, and
using the various repeat modes + the gradient transformation on that
surface?

Probably 2009. (X.Org releases are source releases for all platforms,
not binaries or platform specific.)
