I have a similiar problem with CentOS 5 and the latest xorg packages. I already
compiled the siliconmotion v1.6 against the CentOS 5's xorg base but this
doesn't help.
Do you have an uplink to the mailing list archive issue with the "kernel rom
problem"? I couldn't find it with the Archive

in the past, our company got a siliconmotion driver update to release 1.4.9 of
the siliconmotion driver. But it seems that the features of the 1.4.9 release
have not been given back to the xorg developer community. I have the source
code for this release, and it can be compiled again
