If he is using nvidia-xconfig, I don't think he would be getting an
xorg.conf that would work with anything other than Nvidia's binary
driver.
The last time I used it, nvidia-xconfig gave me a simple xorg.conf
that started X on my machine.
What kind of things are in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? I
