Thanks for the info on this. I ended up going through everything and
found what was happening. basically I was loading all the fb modules
which was causing the freeze. seems in the past I was able to have these
guys loading, and there was no issue.(only thing I can think of is I had
[ 15.099] drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 11
[ 15.100] drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::01:00.0
[ 15.100] (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because
of a version mismatch.
[dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0,
[dri] but the kernel reports
Make sure fbcon is loaded otherwise you'll lose console when radeon loads.

yeah, those are built-in into the kernel.
last I remember I rebuilt udev so maybe this has something todo with this.

just updated the xserver and everything and am noticing this in xorg.conf
