I think the answer is a little complicated:
* The Window Manager / Desktop Environment typically runs alongside other
client applications, not beneath them. It does get involved with
transactions between other apps and the server, but it is sort of just
another client.
* The Display Manager runs
idea of what it will look like. If
somebody wanted to pick it up and finish it, that would be great;
otherwise I'll get to it sometime soon.
