I got the solution to reach 120Hz I need to use the following command:
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --set "scaling mode" None

But i still get the impression that the 120Hz mode doesn't even stick,
regardless of whether it's using the native mode or not.

For 120Hz with nvidia driver I had to disable the following option:
