I tested the exact same setup with 2.6.32-rc3-git1 and the problem went away.
Evidence indicates KMS very bad in the 2.6.32-rc3-git3 kernel. Kernel changelog

I just checked out the vanilla 2.6.32-rc4 kernel with the KMS initialization
