I've got an opportunity to buy a 22" 1920x1440 monitor at a very good
price, and I want to know:

What video card will support virtual 3200x200 @x 32bpp under
    XFree86 (presumably 4.1)?

I _really_ like running XFree86 with large virtual screens -- as I
write, I'm running "virtual 2048x1536" on a physical 1280x1024 and
I find that has really enhanced my productivity. That's the largest
I can get to run on my (nVidia-based) system (in spite of 64M of
video RAM, which should support much larger screens); moreover,
according to comments at nVidia's web-site, it is the largest
_physical_ screen the cards will support in hardware and I'm guessing
the nVidia drivers limit themselves by that...

In the XFree86 documentation, all I can find is a remark that "some
virtual display sizes are not available for some hardware drivers"
and no indication what the limits are, on a driver-by-driver basis
(without doing an RTFS on the entire source code base).
