Ok, I have tinkered with the settings and recompiled a new 2.4.18 vanilla
kernel with agpgart and radeon as modules, and I can modprobe them both:
[root:/home/david]$ /sbin/lsmod
Module Size Used byNot tainted
radeon 93240 1
agpgart12960
Probably there are still some MESA-Files.
Yes, that there is, I compiled it myself. Mesa-4.0.1 and GLUT which is in the
demopack.

On this point, I have a lot of instability on my Duron, while working with
high intensity GL. X11pref was no problem, but RtCW etc. would bring it to
it's knees. Added mem=nopentium to lilo.conf - problems all gone.

It works fine with Quake3, Chromium and GLTron for me. Only the RTCW
would do it if only I could fix this damn thing?
