Since I got my dual-boot RH7.2/Win98 laptop, it's been bugging me that
windows does a nice xinerama-like two-screen virtual desktop, while linux
and XFree86 4.1 doesn't...

Nope. The support for this hasn't been written.
It's on my to-do list, but fairly low priority.
