I have gone through alot with this.
Basically when i first installed, I boot up using "Linux" mode on LILO and it gives me a login prompt with the ASCII tux penguin, then my screen goes Black. I was told its X trying to start, and can't so its some kind of loop. I have tryed ctrl+alt+backspace, ctrl+alt+ to change resolution and then I have tryed going into Single user mode, editing the actual /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config which I did and didn't change a darn thing. Then I have reinstalled about 3 diff times. Tryed every mode on my ConfigX list on the install which consists of. System supports multi-head
configuration
1.) Config all heads independently <-- doesn't
work.
2.) Use Xinerame extension <-- doesn't work. 3.) Config only card "Intel Corp.|82810 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] 0" (PCI:0:1:0) <-- doesn't work. 4.) Config only card "ATI|Rage 128 Pro 1" (PCI:1:5:0) <-- doesn't work. I have also tryed, reinstalling again, and
testing all kinds of mode using my ATI Rage card since when I select the other
things like 1, or 2, or 3, it just ask me if I want to boot X at the start of
booting or whatever. So I stuck with ATI Rage 128 Pro that install, and I
kept trying to test it. I tryed to install 3. something XF86* and it said
something like rpm- not found. So I used the second on the list 4.
something, because the first time I used the 4. (the newest one) and it wouldn't
work. I tryed doing different monitors with the ATI testing mode,
but everytime i tested it still gave me the same error and when I tryed to
change monitors again it appeared it still had the default monitor which is what
I actually have selected. some SVGA stuff. The error I was getting
the whole time when hitting test on the ConfigX thing was this:
/tmp/imm.o: init_module: No such
device
/tmp/ppa.o: init_module: No such device Maybe if I knew what this meant I could fix it.
Conclusion: My problem basically is I can't
get X to work, so I have no gui and i'm stuck in a shell. Linux is great,
I have been studying it for about 2 months so I know alot about it, learning
advanced bash shell scripting and other things as we speak. It does me no
good when I can't even boot into my GUI though. I know i'm not a moronic
idiot who is doing something very simple wrong. I can't find help for this
topic though, and seems like nobody else has run into this problem where I have
looked.
I'm running off a
Intel Pentium 3 processor, 600mhz 256ram if that helps. *******Now this error I get all the time when I
do startx Thats one step further though at least its generating an
error! There is more to it but its just confirming that things were
working, this is where the errors start and I don't know how to get a copy of
the actual log because I have to dual boot and I have no disks to save it
too.**************

--- The following is what happens everytime that
text scrolls down my screen before my screen goes black I was trying to
configure my settings with XFdrake --expert, and i noticed it was like my
computer was doing something it was "thinking" so I went ahead and hit enter and
it musta had some other thing happen when i hit enter cuz this is what normally
is displayed but it flashed back off the blank screen and showed me that.
Does anyone know a solution to fixing this so that I can get into
GUI?
