I bought an HP 5495 several days ago and have been trying to install
Mandrake Linux ever since. Everything works good until configuring
X. Nothing seemed to work. Then I heard that the i830 drivers are inside
the i810 module, so I just need to compile up the latest XFree86 to get
needed support. I eventually got this working, and ended up with a number
of Symbol Unresolved errors. I then tried my original XFree86 that came
with Mandrake, and it gave me the EXACT SAME errors. Turns out the
Mandrake 8.1 i810 module already had i830 drivers.

The best thing about this news is I could now call Mandrake support, since
the i810 is certified. After several false starts, they pointed me back to
the Intel Website. Even though I had used the search engine to find 830
and Linux, with no results, there IS a web page on the 830 and Linux.

At http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel830m/tti013.htm was the
answer I've been looking for.
        1) Full support is NOT available in XFree86 4.1
        2) A driver has been written and released to major Linux distributors
        3) XFree86 4.2 should have full support.
        4) In the meantime, you can use the VESA driver, and it details the needed
setup. I'll try to post my set up on www.linux-laptop.net in the near future.

The VESA driver is funny. I have a 15" LCD screen capable of 1400X1050,
but instead get a 1024X768 box in the middle of the screen. However, my
desktop is 1400X1050, and scrolls around in this box. But it works.

Good luck to anyone else that has been fight this Chip and/or laptop.
