First, let me apologize if these a repost, but my first attempt seems to have
failed.
I recently installed a Mandrake cooker version of XFree86 4.2 on my toshiba
laptop with a Trident Cyber 9397 video card.
The original configuration using my old XF86Config-4 file, left me with a

Can you try the binaries provided by XFree86 at ftp.xfree86.org ?

I did a reinstall using the ftp.xfree86.org binaries, with did not make a
difference.
The configuration created by XFree86 -configure gives a display with a
colormapping that is almost unreadable. When I add the lines
HorizSync 31.5-48.5
VertRefresh 40-70
to the config file, display is
After running Mandrake XFdrake, hte interactive configuration for X, it
appears that what I was referring to as "sparkly" is actually a color depth of
8. All other color depths give a screwed up color map that is, for lack of a
better term, psychedelic.

No, 4.1 and 4.1.99 worked fine for me. It didn't break until 4.2.

There isn't a 4.1.99
Can you check out 4.1.99.1 and 4.1.99.2 and so on from CVS and build
and tell me where it broke for you ?

In fact,
I think it might be the Xv extension that's had a bad effect on the
9397.
Can you find the code in trident_driver.c that says...
#ifdef XvExtension
if (pTrident->Chipset >= TGUI9660)
TRIDENTInitVideo(pScreen);
#endif
and put an #if 0, #endif around it. Rebuild 4.2 and try
Ok, I'll give this a shot this afternoon and let you know.

I have changed the code as you suggested but there is no noticeable change in
the behaviour. I will include a log for comparison.

Apparently, I had not, I must have only restarted X, because things seem to be
working fine now. Thanks.

Thanks good.
Thanks for testing.

Robert,
Can you now remove that #if 0, #endif and look in trident_video.c
for the line that says...
OUTW(0x3C4, 0x3421);
and change that to
OUTW(0x3C4, 0x3420);
make install this new driver and let me know.
Alan.

I think video has been around in the older driver versions which used
to work for you.
It is possible that the gamma, contrast, brighness, hue or saturation

I'm afraid this didn't work, it went back to the original psychedelic
behaviour.

This doesn't seem to be it either, this also returned it to the origianl
psychedelic behaviour.

Yes, for both tests I compiled, installed and then powered down. To date the
only solution was the change made in trident_driver.c .

Hi Robert,
I assume the origin of the problem is somewhere in ResetVideo.
Can you comment out the entire code in this function and see if
this is true? If so
Yes, we have some progress here, by commenting out the ResetVideo module things
seem to be working.

You need to start narrowing it down in that function now Robert.
