That is actually very easy to do.
just set a $DISPLAY, then run X11.bin directly for that $DISPLAY.. then you can
launch any wm you want on that same $DISPLAY...
like...
cd into Xquartz/Contents/MacOS
do a... export DISPLA

normally
It happened again!
After some sleep my PowerBook woke up. It took longer than usual. And
when The X11 desktop appeared I could see for a split second the login/
authentication tool. Maybe the cause was that I had my WiFi router
switched off, not intending to go Internet.
