Hi all,

I am a lawyer and part-time software developer in California. We have an in-house software engineer who works on our law firm projects.

It's 2025 and everyone is talking about Wayland, but Wayland doesn't meet our requirements. Neither does using VNC/remote desktop, due to the typically clumsy interaction between the user and the server. So we are developing a custom X11 application in C for my law firm. This is intended to replace our existing web-based portal system that is showing its age and is far less secure than the new system will be. It turns out that X11 is the ideal platform for our use case because we intend to run compute and centralize all the documents and workflow on one heavy duty server, and all the staff already have Macs with XQuartz built-in. The Mac Minis are perfect as "thin clients" for the new system, and in our testing, SSH with X11 forwarding and compression works well for us-- at least with a basic widget set. The system may also help us avoid having to develop and maintain three different desktop versions of the application for Mac, Linux, and Windows, while adding convenience for hybrid workers who have Macs at home.

I checked out the XQuartz GitHub and the mailing lists, and I've tried the latest beta release. I don't see a roadmap or list of feature requests. Is there one? If not, I have a few XQuartz-specific ideas that I'd like to offer to have our in-house engineer work on, at my expense. But I'd like to ask on this list what the highest priority items are first, if any. Thanks for your consideration.

Best,

Andrew Watters
