Using 16.04. If I have for example a .png file on my desktop the icon
will be a thumbnail of the actual image. What I want is to have just a
generic icon that's the same for all image files. So I know from looking
at it it's an image, but I do not want a thumbnail of that particular
image fi

Move your Mousepointer to the free space of your Desktop. Click your
_right_ Mousebutton and choose "Desktop settings..." from the menu.
Now choose the "Icon"-Tab and uncheck "show thumbnails
