Dear Friends,
I would like to inform you that the life of Mr. Macherla Mohan Rao, the
President of AP Cheneta Karmika Samakhya and the member of South India Handloom
Weavers Organising Committee (SIHWOC) are in threat. The threat to his life is
a matter of serious concern to all of us who have a shared concern for the
democratic peoples struggles striving for pro-people policies, social justice,
and responsive and humane governance.
The threat to the life of Mohan Rao by the so-called Nallmalla Nallathrachulu
(Black Cobras), an illegal armed outfit and inaction on the part of the police
is a clear instance of the growing intolerance of the vested interests,
establishment of the and so-called law and order machinery to the civil society
leaders and movements. The arrests of the 10 numbers of local activists of the
Cheneta Karmika Samakya by the police in Chirala on 9-12-2005, instead of
providing protection to the social activists, only further shows the callous
attitude of the government towards the Hand wavers cause and has to be
understood as an attempt to throttle the peoples voices that may be perceived
as a cause of inconvenience by the powers-that-be.
As you know, Macherla Mohan Rao is known for several years in the country as a
conscientious leader of struggle for the rights of the handloom weavers. Mohan
through his untiring efforts strived towards the sensitization of the
intellectuals, policy makers, officials and the larger civil society to the
need for protecting the handloom sector and the possible social and economic
consequences of the anti handloom policies.
So we would like to request that, you may please send fax messages to the Hon:
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Hon: Governor of Andhra Pradesh, The Chief
Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, District collector of Ongole and to the
Superintendent of Police of the Ongole district of Andhra Pradesh at the
following fax numbers to get Mr. Mohan Rao and his colleagues are being
released.
