Gujjar stir: SC declines PIL against Raje, Jaswant 9 Jul, 2007 l 2218 hrs IST NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a PIL seeking probe by an "independent" agency into the alleged role of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and senior BJP leaders in the recent Gujjars' agitation for ST status. A Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, while declining to pass any direction to the Union Government, however, said that if any innocent person is falsely booked by police for the violence, such individuals can directly approach the court for relief. The PIL filed by Devendra Singh, secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Vikas Sanghatan, alleged that the violent incidents between May 29 and June 4 in the northern state, was fallout of the reported rift between the factions belonging to Vasundhara Raje and senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi had witnessed violence over the issue. The petitioner cited the complaint registered by Jaswant Singh's wife against Raje, relating to the controversy on the painting that portrayed the Chief Minister as a Goddess, a week prior to the commencement of the Gujjar's agitation.
