Untouchability still prevalent: CPM

Coimbatore, July 26: Untouchability and boycott of Arundathiyars
(Dalits), like two-tumbler system and ban on entry into temples, are
still prevailing at various places in the district, according to the
CPM in Coimbatore district.

Incidents of untouchability came to light during a survey carried out
by the party at different taluks, blocks and unions in the district,
and also in some parts of the city, the CPM said in its report
submitted to the district collector a copy of which was released to
the press here.

At various panchayats in Periyanaickenpalayam union and Pollachi
taluk, Arundathiyars were not allowed to perform poojas in temples, it
said and sought immediate action to prevent such atrocities.

Similarly, Arundathiyars were not allowed to enter into temples at
more than 16 places in Sarkar Samakulam union, while these sections
were boycotted from participating in the festival in the villages of
Pilichi, Naickenpalayam panchayat Harijan colony, Maniyankarampalayam
Harijan colony and Kammalampatti in Pollachi, the survey said.

Two-tumbler system was still prevalent in some tea shops in Pilichi,
Subbe Koundenputhur, Vettaikaranpudur (where a separate tea shop
existed for Arundathiyars) and Pollachi, the party claimed. (Agencies)
