Usha Mehra panel arrives in city

Commission to conduct public hearing

HYDERABAD: Attempts by Mala Mahanadu to confront Usha Mehra,
chairperson, and members of the National Commission for categorisation
of SCs in the State, at the airport here, went in vain as the police
drove away the panel secretly immediately on its arrival late on
Saturday night.

The commission is in city to conduct a public hearing amidst a call
given by rival factions of Mala Mahanadu to obstruct the proceedings
at the Hyderabad Collectorate on Sunday.

Blessing in disguise

The police hoodwinked onlookers at the airport by posting a huge force
at one exit and driving away Ms. Mehra and her colleagues from another
point meant for international flights around 10 p.m.

A heavy downpour just before the scheduled arrival of the flight from
Delhi was a blessing in disguise for the police as it ensured thin
attendance at the airport.

Earlier, police arrested leaders of both factions of Mala Mahanadu
that are opposed to categorisation of SCs and shifted them at Bolarum
and Trimulgherry police stations.

They would be detained there until the completion of hearing on Sunday evening.

The president of one faction, Jupudi Prabhakar Rao, was picked up from
the New MLA Quarters while his rival, Karem Sivaji, and 25 others were
arrested as they were approaching the airport. Mr. Rao, an MLC, was at
his quarter at the time of arrest.

Tomatoes and eggs

His outfit had planned to attack the commission with tomatoes and eggs
when it landed in the city. Mr. Rao claimed that four squads were put
on the job.

The rival factions had created a scene when two directors of the
commission had received representations for and against categorisation
at the Ambedkar Bhavan last month.
