I have Solaris 10 update 2
and from what I've found there isn't an easy way

Yes. The 'migration' infrastructure is part of Update 3
What I was trying to point out is with the unbundled Container Manager software,
on top of Solaris 10 Update 3, moving sparse zone is a matter of few clicks.
( i.e. You have a friendly UI and you could do it remotely. )

ok so now that I know I need to upgrade from SOL10 U2 to U4 to
have ability to move the zones properly I have my zone directories
on a seperate file system than root.
Therefore can I upgrade the OS then copy ofthe /etc/zones directory
