up to ignore the gTLD, so that www.gerf.org and www.gerf.com
etc. get routed to the same object automatically. Is that
correct?

My site access rule is at:

All the site[123] directories are SiteRooted

Didn't work in what sense? They couldn't log in, or didn't get the access
you expected? More access or less, or just weird?
