;) What does the future hold for the increasingly harried life of the DBA? DB2 guru and searchDatabase.com site expert Craig Mullins sought to answer that question in an interesting article in this month's issue of DM Review. He described four trends that will impact data administration in the coming years: bigger and bigger databases ("zettabytes" anyone?), the proliferation of mobile devices (the "PDA DBA"), more heterogeneity (some companies already have upwards of 10 different DBMS's) and the ever-increasing rate of change (who can keep up with major new versions every year?). I asked a few attendees at the Data Warehousing Institute's World Conference in Orlando, Florida last week what they thought about these trends and they tended to agree -- although many doubted that their company would have a zettabyte-sized database any time soon (a zettabyte is a billion terabytes in case you're wondering). What do you think? What are your predictions for the future? Click on over to our DBA Water Cooler forum to add your two cents. Till next time, Tim |

| Tip of the Week: |
| This large script performs a hot backup of an Oracle database with no interaction. The user of the script must have write privileges to the backup drives or devices. The script writes to a disk but can be modified to write to a tape device. |
