XML SUPPORT IN SQL SERVER 2000 | by Baya Pavliashvili

MORE RECENT TIPS FROM SEARCHDATABASE MEMBERS

WHO OR WHAT IS HOGGING THE DATABASE? | by Scott Taylor
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci780359,00.html
By using UNIX tools such as "top," it is normally easy to determine
which Oracle process is hogging CPU cycles and/or disk space. But
what is that process doing and who is running it? Running the code in
this tip will prompt for a process ID (PID) and will return details
of that process.

HOT BACKUP UNIX SCRIPT | by Alan Copeland
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci780366,00.html
This large script performs a hot backup of an Oracle database with no
interaction. The user of the script must have write privileges to the
backup drives or devices. The script writes to a disk but can be
modified to write to a tape device.

AVOID JOINING TABLES ON A RANGE IN SQL SERVER | by Michael Milligan
http://www.searchDatabase.com/tip/1,289483,sid13_gci780367,00.html
Even when columns are indexed and the result set returned is only one
row, SQL Server can choke. This tip includes a query that was
attempting to scan the entire table for both the ">" selection and
the "<" selection. Converting these to sub-selects did nothing to
prevent the full table scans. Watch out for this!

BOOK OF THE WEEK | Database Design for Mere Mortals:
A Hands-On Guide to Relational Database Design

Relational databases are powerful tools for organizing data, but
learning to use them effectively can be painful. "Relational Database
Design for Mere Mortals" explains the concepts of relational-database
design in an easy-to-digest fashion that covers both the theoretical
underpinnings and their practical implications. Michael J. Hernandez
covers all the basics--table and field structure, keys,
relationships, business rules, and more--but always keeps his feet on
the ground with advice for real-world implementations and a
particularly strong section on analyzing your current database
infrastructure.
