The searchDatabase.com team is headed out to San Francisco this week for the "SQL2TheMax" portion of the big Visual Studio Live conference. searchDatabase site expert Mike Hotek will also be there, giving an introductory presentation on replication, so be sure to check that out on Friday. Bill will also make an appearance, finally unveiling VisualStudio.Net for the masses. So if you see me wandering the floor on Thursday or Friday, be sure to say hello! Are you SQL Server developers out there excited about .NET anyway? Do you agree with author Ken Getz, who said: "...I ain't ever going back. Programming in anything else is painful now..."? Has anybody tried both .NET and J2EE and can offer a hands-on comparison? Let me know, and I'll increase .NET coverage on searchDatabase if there's interest. On a related note, if you're wondering how SQL Server stacks up against other enterprise database management systems, you're in luck. This week's Featured Topic includes over one hundred independent reviews and analyses of the Big Three DBMS's: SQL Server, DB2, and Oracle. If you're considering making a purchase, or are just curious, this will be an invaluable resource. Till next time, Tim DiChiara, Editor |

Here's a tough one: Member "Hal da DBA" has a legacy database -- the Raima DB Vista, version 3.20 -- which is running on IBM RS/6000 under AIX. He needs to cross-reference against a SQL 7.0 database. Any help out there? If so, go to our "DBA Water Cooler" forum. |

| Tip of the Week: |
| Troubleshooting locking problems in SQL Server is one of those activities that DBA's would much rather avoid; alas, most have to it do at one point or another. In fact, understanding database transactions and locking is what differentiates many beginners from the real pros. This article is an overview of potential locking problems, what causes them, how to detect and resolve them. |
