Our daily lives are full of unknowns and uncertainties--especially if you are a DBA or a database developer. Sure, there are exceptions like Don Burleson--check out Don's audio presentation last week...yikes, this guy knows his stuff!--but us mere mortals occasionally need some hand-holding, considering the amazing complexity of the modern DBMS.

Enter searchDatabase.com. Besides all the tech tips we publish and our extensive Best Web Links directory, we have also assembled a bevy of industry experts waiting to answer your toughest questions. Our experts have written some of the most respected books in the industry, and are CEOs, developers, senior DBAs, data architects and modelers, all working with database technology on a daily basis. Why not benefit from their experience? If you have a SQL, design, Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, OODBMS, or data warehousing brain-teaser, they can help. Just pick a category and submit your question--simple! And be sure to check out the hundreds of questions that have already been answered.

As an added convenience, we've just debuted a new Ask the Experts newsletter. Each issue summarizes the best expert advice of the month. Some of you received the first issue last week, but to continue to receive it, you need to sign up. Simply edit your member profile by checking off the "Ask the Experts" box in the searchDatabase "Edit email subscriptions" section.

Finally, don't forget about our "Stump the Database Experts" contest this week. If you can ask a question so tricky that even our experts are stumped -- or at least mildly befuddled for a few seconds -- you'll win a free book. Good luck!

Till next time,

Tim DiChiara, Editor

This Week: In the forums
>> SQL Server 2000 RAID set
Member "Karthik" is using SQL Server 2000 on Win2000, with two I/O controllers with dual bus (channel). He wants to know if the data sets transferred will be split across two channels (in a controller) in a balanced way to get a maximum throughput. He's been waiting for answer for a while now! If you can help, go to our "Database-webconnectivity" forum.
>> Converting Oracle 10.7 to 11.0.3 Apps
Member "Srini" is working with the Oracle Apps (Manufacturing) upgrade from 10.7 to 11.0.3, and he needs to find out the customization done for the 10.7 forms and apply these same changes to the 11.0.3 forms. Any help out there? If so, go to our "DBA Water Cooler" forum.

Tip of the Week:
Many times you may need to find what SQL is currently running and which user is running it. The SQL in this tip runs on Oracle versions 7 and 8.1.7 and gives the SID, Serial#, SQL text, and the Oracle and OS user running it. The SID and serial number information may be used to kill the particular session if required. Rohit has the script saved as whatdousers.sql and just types @whatdousers at the SQL prompt.
