Greetings all! This week we're focusing on XML -- the technology you probably love to hate, but won't go away. Indeed, with web services hype reaching its peak, and every major DBMS vendor integrating it ever deeper, XML is in the headlines once again. Our Featured Topic has dozens of XML tips, tutorials, webcasts, expert answers, and much more.

We can also please you XML naysayers out there. Our columnist Fabian Pascal has written extensively about XML -- or perhaps I should say, has criticized it mercilessly. He considers it a "reinvention of the hierarchic database wheel".

As he wrote in his column Forward to the Past, "whatever 'dramatic gains' are achieved by XML data management, if any, there is ample experience to indicate that they are likely to be overwhelmed by the gross inefficiency of regressing from centralized database management back to file-processing application programs, which was discarded years ago. Something to keep in mind when bombarded with hype". That's Fabian just getting warmed up, so be sure to check out the fireworks in his other essays. Speaking of which, Fabian's April screed -- about the the need for education in data fundamentals, the misconception that relational technology is all about database design, and more -- can be found here.

What is your opinion about XML and its increasing convergence with database technology? Is it truly useful, or are you implementing it only because of pressure from management? Is it a passing fad or the harbinger of things to come? Pop on over to our DBA Water Cooler discussion forum and let me know what you think.

Till next time.
