Any old school DBMS veterans out there? As we are highlighting in this week's Featured Topic, there is life beyond the Big Three of Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server. Indeed, studies have shown that most mid- to large-sized organizations have from three to ten different DBMS products, and many of these are "legacy" systems that have long since fallen off the market radar screen.

Which legacy or small-vendor database products does your organization currently use? Why? IBM's IMS is still in widespread use, for example--is it just too expensive or complex to migrate legacy data? Sybase is common in the financial services industry and Intersystems Cache is popular in health care. Do niche products better serve your specific industry? Are you planning on migrating to one of the big three, or is diversification a specific part of your IT strategy? Is systems integration a growing challenge for you?

Let me know what you think! Click on over to our DBA Water Cooler and pass along your proverbial two cents. We'll incorporate your thoughts into an upcoming analysis story.

Cheers, Tim

Tip of the Week:
At times, you might need to return SQL Server data to the client in random order. Unfortunately SQL Server doesn't provide built-in functionality for random sorting of the result set. The good news is that a bit of coding can help you get around this limitation. Here is how you can do that.
