This week, I'd like to highlight an 11-page white paper that Bill Inmon, "the father of data warehousing," recently wrote for SearchDatabase.com. It's called "Analytics: Ten critical success factors" and it's available only to our members, free of charge. Click here to download it.
The article begins with a brief history of data warehousing and analytics--"the direct payoff of the data warehouse"--then delves into the factors that are essential to implement a successful analytics environment. For example, in the #2 factor, Bill describes the very predictable infrastructure required by analytics: above all, it needs integrated, complete, historical, and easily accessible data. In #3, he highlights the important point that analytics needs to be developed in an iterative manner, with lots of user feedback between development phases.
Bill Inmon has almost 30 years of experience in database technology management and data warehouse design. He has written 39 books and over 500 articles in every major trade journal and is known globally for his seminars on developing data warehouses. He also consults with a large number of Fortune 1000 clients, offering data warehouse design and database management services. This white paper is a solid, high-level overview of an increasingly essential part of modern information technology. With analytics systems costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, ignore these success factors at your own peril!
Have a good week, Tim

DB2 UDB load pending tablespace status
Member "JJ" added a new disk controller and new drives, but now data on two devices is missing and the associated tablespaces (one for data and the other for related indexes) is in load pending. What to do? Go to our "DBA Water Cooler" forum if you can offer any advice.

DECODE instead of UNION
Member "mhamilton" has a view using a UNION between the SELECTS. He thinks he can do better with a DECODE function, but is not getting the same results. Go to our "Data warehousing and data analysis" forum if you can help "mhamilton" figure out the problem. |

| Tip of the Week: |
| Have you been wondering how you might use Java stored procedures instead of Oracle's native PL/SQL stored procedures? This article discusses the pros and cons of Java stored procedures, guidelines on how to build them, database vs. app server Java, performance considerations, troubleshooting, and rollout/security aspects. The final section of this paper includes a Java stored procedure example that allows you to send AOL instant messages from the database. |
