At Oracle's love fest OracleWorld two months ago, two words were uttered in equal proportions: "the" and "grid." Thankfully, at last week's Professional Association for SQL Server show in Seattle, grid computing hype was nowhere in sight. Instead, "Yukon," the next-generation SQL Server, was the toast of the party.
At the PASS show, speakers gave several thousand eager DBAs and developers their first glimpses of what's in store. Significant improvements in the security model, management tools, and integration with .NET were on display. One change touted by several speakers as "revolutionary" were the new business intelligence features. Amir Netz of Microsoft showed off its new architecture -- a combination of the relational (OLTP) and multidimensional (OLAP) engines into an "unified dimensional model" -- real-time analytics, a new data modeling paradigm, native web services and more. It was an impressive demonstration.
Naturally, there are nay-sayers. One Linux-oriented SearchDatabase.com member wrote: "Ho hum. Once again Microsoft comes out with a breakthrough that their competitors have had for a couple of years now. When will this proprietary company simply go away or else open itself up to using the standard techniques that everyone else is?"
What do you think? Will Yukon be a "revolution" or will Microsoft's Windows-only mantra eventually halt its growth in the enterprise? Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your thoughts. If you need more background before forming an opinion, more Yukon news is available here.
Until next time, Tim
