 From the Editor:

by Sara Cushman, Assistant Editor

Last week, SearchDatabase.com Senior Site Editor Tim DiChiara opined that the happy days of IT spending may be back, particularly for small and mid-sized businesses. Perhaps not coincidentally, the big three DBMS vendors have recently been waging war to win over these new customers. Oracle and DB2 have both introduced lower-priced versions of their respective DBMSs specifically to attract the smaller crowd that SQL Server has traditionally courted.

So what do these industry trends and the tactics of the big vendors have to do with you? Maybe nothing. But it could mean that there's a good chance that you'll have to deal with upgrading, installing, or maintaining a system new to you, or even multiple ones. Are you ready?

Administering a heterogeneous environment or learning a new DBMS certainly has its challenges, but if you happen to be making the switch to DB2, we can help you get started.

Check out our popular Learning Guide: DB2 basics for Oracle and SQL Server pros or these tips on how to leverage your Oracle 9i skills or your SQL Server 2000 skills to learn DB2 UDB v8.
