I'm pleased to announce a new addition to our popular
"Learning Guide" series, this time devoted to everybody's favoite
scripting language, SQL. We've compiled a huge array of quality
advice and scripts from our SQL guru Rudy Limeback and well-known
author Joe Celko into a document chock full of useful tips and
tricks for the practicing DBA and developer.
The Learning Guide to
SQL contains answers to your questions about
primary and foreign keys, selecting, updating, inserting and
deleting data, calculations, working with times and dates, and
performance issues. We've also thrown in a few excellent webcasts
by Joe Celko ("SQL for Smarties"), who talks about various
advanced topics such as how to think in sets.
This is a feature that you simply must check out! (You can
also submit your own tough SQL question to Rudy
here.)
On an unrelated note: I still need your help! Recall that
last week, I asked you managers of SQL Server, Oracle, and DB2
shops out there if you've tried negotiating price with the big
DBMS vendors? Have you been successful and if so, how much have
you saved? What strategies work or don't work? Can small or
medium-sized business negotiate price as well? We'd like to post
your observations, experiences, and rants in an upcoming article.
