Business intelligence seems to be in the midst of one of its periodic waves of hype this month. (And, no, I'm not talking about Enron or WorldCom executives getting any smarter!)

Articles from SearchDatabase and around the web have recently been published that extol the virtues of analytics, data mining, report-writing and related technologies that help make sense of the reams of data generated at the typical company today.

In our piece Web services, BI fuel DBA job market, we report that business intelligence, SQL Server, and open source platforms are enjoying a recent rise in demand and thus DBAs specializing in those areas are as well. (Finally!)

An excellent article from our friends at Database Trends and Applications concurs. Recent salary figures point to a rise in annual pay rates for database administrators and signs of recovery in the sickly DBA job market. At the same time, the DBA job is changing so quickly that many of the new jobs come with new responsibilities and titles. One of the hottest new skillsets required is BI.

Here is a sampling of other BI news from around the web:

What kinds of BI projects has your company implemented lately? After many years of marketing hype, are you jumping on the bandwagon and adopting some of the cutting-edge technologies out there, or do you rely on custom apps or that old standy, Excel? Who uses BI in your company: business analysts, managers, nobody? Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and let me know what kind of problems you're facing and what BI-related topics you'd like to see us cover in more detail.

Cheers, Tim

>> Ask the Expert: Having all values in a list
Our SQL expert Rudy Limeback answers the question: "I have a table that has two ids: id1 and id2, and there are multiple id2's for every id1. I have a list of id2s, and I want to write a select statement that will pull the id1s that have a row for each of the id2s in my list. How would I do that?"

Tip of the Week:
SQL Server counters
With more than 156 individual counters and the ability to create your own counters SQL Server's Performance Monitor has an almost bewildering array of tools for you to work with. However, some counter types are much more valuable than others, and your particular setup and troubleshooting will direct your needs to one set of counters or another.
