Ingres still doesn't get any respect.
The Ingres DBMS was originally developed as a research project at the University of California, Berkeley, during the mid-'70s. It became a commercial product in the mid-'80s, with features and reliability comparable to Oracle, users say.
Despite its pedigree, we reported last week that Ingres DBAs continue to try to counter the perception that it has fewer features or is less robust than the "Big 5" DBMS vendors.
However, Computer Associates International Inc.'s recent decision to turn Ingres over to the open source community -- and compete directly with MySQL -- may be changing all that.
Analysts say that Ingres' maturity gives it an advantage over MySQL and other open source DBMSes. Indeed, unicode data support, table partitioning, parallel query, online table reorganization, triggers, bi-directional replication, automatic space management and program language precompilers are key features in Ingres that are not commonly found in other open source databases.
What do you think about the re-emergence of Ingres? Have you used it in the past and are you considering giving it a second chance? Does Ingres currently run any of your company's mission-critical operations? Email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your two cents and we'll be sure to cover it more on SearchDatabase.com if there is sufficient interest.
Till next week, Tim
