SUN BETS ON BUSINESS BUNDLES | San Jose Mercury News
This week Sun Microsystems mounts a new challenge against Microsoft
with the release of its new Sun Java Desktop System, formerly known
by the code names Orion and Mad Hatter. Sun says the software bundle
-- containing Suse Linux, the Mozilla Web browser, the Gnome desktop
user interface and Ximian's Evolution e-mail software -- is an effort
to free customers from Microsoft's Windows and Office software.

AOL, CINGULAR RAMP UP WIRELESS IM | InternetNews
America Online has come to terms on a deal with wireless handset
service provider Cingular Wireless that will soon enable their
instant messaging users to send messages back and forth across each
other's networks.

A group of more than 40 companies are gathering this week in
California to formulate new strategies for fighting the

THE MISSING LINK: Instant messaging -- the watercooler of the '00s

Here's another example of research that doesn't exactly make you sit
back and give your chin a ruminative rub. It could very well conjure
the word "duh" from dormancy. Researchers in the U.K. found that most
workers with instant messaging (IM) on their work computers ping for
pleasure, not business. Here it comes -- DUH! Dissing the boss,
talking smack about co-workers and flirting are the predominate
themes in workplace IMs. Workers in the U.S., on the other hand, are
a little more conservative -- because more of them know their IMs can
be traced.
