Study shows WebSphere trailing .NET
[InternetNews]
Is Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET platform really "significantly better" than IBM's J2EE-based WebSphere Studio platform? A new report says yes, but critics are questioning the study's methodology.

[SearchSmallBizIT.com]
If it's true that everything old is new again, then Web services are an old concept indeed. Yet the technology is putting a fresh spin on finding standard ways of helping systems communicate.
Sender ID group shuts down
[InternetNews]
The Internet Engineering Task Force has decided to shut down the working group charged with finding a standard for e-mail authentication, which had been deadlocked over the use of Microsoft's Sender ID proposal. Instead it will rely on industry experimentation with multiple proposals and a subsequent review of deployment experience.

Domino Dictionary Challenge: Children can't climb this one
This is a method of placing and locating files (called records or keys) in a database, especially when all the data is known to be in random access memory (RAM). The algorithm finds data by repeatedly dividing the number of ultimately accessible records in half until only one remains.

Siemens says... you stink
[Reuters]
"Curiously strong" Altoids mints aren't your only defense against curiously bad breath. Cell phones are now roaming into halitosis territory -- and are even calling body odor (BO) on the carpet. Siemens is going on the offensive, working on a chip that sniffs out malodors. The chip goes into a mobile phone -- when it gets a whiff of something foul -- your breath, your body, your surroundings or all the above -- it will alert you.
No word yet on how it will alert you -- perhaps a call, a text message or a flurry of gagging sounds. Siemens says the "smell phone" will be handy at detecting potentially dangerous gases and possibly keeping folks who've had too much to drink away from the wheel. That's nice, but you have to think that one day, single guys everywhere will be breathing heavily into their cell phones -- and not for the reasons they used to.
