LEAD STORY

HP fighting back in Unix server wars | News: CNET

HP is planning to soup up Superdome with a new server that will sport
twice as many processors as today's Superdome. The 128-processor
version should be ready in 2003 and will symbolize HP's plan of
attack on the Unixverse, where the financially suffering Sun is
master.

GATES TAKES WRAPS OFF WINDOWS XP | News: CNET

Thursday, October 25, 2001 -- an OS is born. Bill Gates has delivered
his new baby, Windows XP in Times Square. This is likely the most
important Windows release since Windows 95, because XP lays the Web
services foundation upon which Microsoft is building its future. Sun
will duke it out with MS over the Web.

WEB SERVICES: COMING SOON, SORT OF | News: searchMiddleware

The industry has to clearly outline the advantages of Web services if
they want the technology to catch on in business, say those attending
the XMLEdge 2001 International XML Conference. Sun this week rolled
out availability of its Web services platform. The company is a big
supporter of ebXML. For the full story, CLICK:

LINDOWS UNITES LINUX AND WINDOWS | News: ZDNet

It's a little bit Linux -- it's a little bit Windows. A new company,
Lindows.com, is hammering out a version of Linux designed to run
Windows programs. No need to write a check to Redmond, plus you may
install Lindows on more than one computer, unlike XP.

THE MISSING LINK | American says he swapped e-mails with Saddam

If they were to make this a movie, it could be called "The Dude and
the Despot." A software engineer from suburban Philadelphia launched
an e-mail on Iraq, specifically Saddam Hussein, asking him to join
the allied forces against terrorism. Expecting to get a response from
that "mailer daemon" guy, he allegedly got a response from the
"Baghdaddy" instead. Christopher Love said Saddam expressed his
sympathies for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and wrote, "God
has created us and to Him we return. May God give you a long life."
No word if the new e-pals plan to meet in person.
