LEAD STORY

Microsoft takes new tack on Java | News: CNET

Be on the lookout for Visual J#.Net. Microsoft will take a test
version of this tool out of the Redmond shed this week. The tool is
bait to lure Java developers over to .Net. It will let programmers
use Java to write code that works only with .Net -- no standalone
Java app building allowed. That fact should help MS dodge licensing
issues with Sun.

Ballmer dismisses Sun's Passport rival | News: Reuters

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says don't give him Liberty -- give him a
break! Ballmer told an industry group in Orlando that Sun's Liberty
Alliance Project, a rival to MS' Passport authentication engine, is
weak and probably won't matter to the world. Ballmer emphasized the
fact that Sun couldn't even get its good buddy AOL to join the
project.

SGI introduces midrange Unix server | News: CNET

The midrange market has another player. SGI has cranked out a
32-processor system. The SGI Origin 300 uses the same modular design
as its big brother, the Origin 3000. SGI says its stuff is cheaper
than Sun's and IBM's.

Intel's multi-billion-dollar vote of confidence | News:
searchNetworking

Intel CEO Craig Barrett says it's possible for companies to come out
of the current economic downturn stronger than they were when they
went in. Barrett told an audience gathered at the Gartner
Symposium/Itxpo in Orlando, Fla. that investing now in research and
development is the key for companies that want to be in a strong
position when the industry takes off.

Protecting your box | Source: Reader Ken Robson

In order to protect your boxes against possible intruders, you should
implement either TCP Wrapper or even with Secure Shell. But some
simple things to do are as easy as removing some basic information
that could benefit a hacker.

THE MISSING LINK | In stores soon -- floating product ads?

Wal-Mart meets "The Jetsons" with a dash of "Ghostbusters" to boot.
Holomedia, a joint American-Hungarian venture, has come up with a way
to turn ads into apparitions. The firm has cranked out a gadget that
can project still or moving pictures in such a way that they seem to
float in mid-air. Stores would use the device to float product ads
out on the sales floor. Just imagine walking into a store and seeing
a giant canned ham levitating in front of you. Maybe you'd prefer to
see a ghost. (Source: Reuters)
