LEAD STORY

PHP FLAW COULD CRASH, BURN WEB SERVERS | SearchSecurity

A security vulnerability in the popular PHP scripting language could
allow an attacker to crash a Web server, or run arbitrary code on a
system. Solaris versions are reportedly easy pickin's in this case.
Users are urged to upgrade or patch immediately.

FIVE WAYS TO BE VIRUS-FREE | SearchSecurity
SearchSecurity's editorial team has devised this quick checklist of
tips enterprises can use to keep malicious code at bay.

MICROSOFT'S .NET SET TO LINK TO APACHE | CNET
Apache -- Microsoft does that. MS plans to bring the open source Web
server heavyweight into the .NET family. Developers will be able to
build links to Apache Web servers using the ASP.NET software layer.
More than half of all Internet sites use Apache, which competes with
Microsoft's own IIS. .NET is making for some strange, or at least
bitter bedfellows -- MS has also extended .NET to Oracle's database
products, with a DB2 version possibly in the offing as well.

SUN REHIRES ULTRASPARC GURUS | CNET
Sun is getting some of its old spark back. A few of the original
UltraSPARC designers are coming back to Sun now that the company has
closed the deal on Afara Websytems. One of the "prodigal sons" is Les
Kohn, who is considered one of the fathers of UltraSPARC I.

SNEAK PREVIEWS OF DB2 V8 | SearchDatabase
Users review IBM's new DB2 v8 release, and while they're generally
high on the new bells and whistles, they're not ready yet to cozy up
to IBM's claim that it's the most significant release in a decade.

THE MISSING LINK | Girl gets lippy with scanner

Don't try this at home. Don't try this anywhere! Catherine Simpson,
11, of the U.K. was trying to scan her face, but the scanner wasn't
cooperating. It grabbed her lip and wouldn't let go. Evidently
Catherine's kisser got caught in a roller on the scanner.
Firefighters had to come in and perform some...um... lip service for
the poor girl. Her lip's fine -- her face-off with technology was no
kiss of death and won't leave any lasting scars. But when Catherine
grows up, you can bet she'll think twice before making a photocopy of
her bum on the office copier. (vnunet)
