OPEN SOURCE'S NEW WEAPON: THE LAW? | CNET
California has a bear on its flag -- is there room for a penguin too?
Open source proponents have drawn up a proposal that would forbid the
state from buying software from any company that doesn't open its
source code and licensing policies. If it survives the legislature as
is, the "Digital Software Security Act" would essentially keep
Microsoft out of state offices.

MICROSOFT AND IBM SIGN WEB SERVICES PACT | silicon.com
Microsoft, IBM and BEA Systems have created a new set of
specifications in an attempt to accelerate the adoption of emerging
Web services. Where is Sun in all this? They're on the outside
looking in.

SUN FIXES SERIOUS WEB SERVER FLAW | IDG News
Flaws in Sun's iPlanet Web server 4.1 and Sun One Web server 6.0 can
let an attacker unleash a DoS attack and run attack code. Sun has
released a work around and service packs to fix the problem. This is
a case where a feature, chunked transfer encoding, has turned into a
flaw.

FLASH FLAW OPENS WINDOWS FOR ATTACK | CNET
Here's a newsflash about Macromedia's Flash Player: It has a flaw
that could let unsavory characters run malicious code on Windows and
Unix-based operating systems. A separate flaw has been found that
could let an attacker read files on a local hard drive. Macromedia's
Web site has the fixes available.

THE MISSING LINK | The Professor and his Mac tattoo

Teenagers have acquired important ammunition in the ongoing struggle
with their parents over the right to bear tattoos. Now kids can
shout, "Christof Koch did it, and he's a professor of Computation and
Neural Systems!" Koch, one of the world's leading neuroscientists,
chose to have an Apple (as in Mac) tattooed on his arm, which isn't
the ink most teens would choose. Aside from that, smart parents know
enough to say, "When you're a professor of Computation and Neural
Systems, you can get one, too!" (Wired)
