The new servers are 17% faster and are bundled with Sun Solaris 8. The chips are 1.015 GHz, up from the 900 MHz UltraSparc III chips that currently run the 280R server. WHAT SCALES FROM WORKGROUP TO DATA CENTER? SUN'S SAN CAN | BioITWorld Sun is tooting the horn of its new StorEdge Open SAN Architecture -- the company calls it the sole heterogeneous SAN that can scale from workgroup to data center. Sun also claims the product makes management easier, makes fuller use of resources and trims TCO. BEA'S NEW JROCKIT JVM READY FOR BLASTOFF | IDG News BEA has beefed up its JVM for Intel-based servers. Right now, most BEA customers use a Sun or HP JVM, but BEA officials anticipate a swell of demand for its JRockit 7.0 JVM for servers running Windows or Linux. JRockit 7.0 is available for 32-bit versions of Windows 2000 and Red Hat's Advanced Server operating systems. POISON APPLETS TAINT JVM IN IE | vnunet Bug trackers say the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in the latest versions of Internet Explorer has flaws that can let attackers launch arbitrary code on a victim's system. All the victim has to do is click on a poisonous Web site or e-mail. MS is working on a patch -- users can disable Java applets until it's ready. Experts say the problem isn't with Sun's code, but Microsoft's tweaking. SUN LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD LINUX PARTNERS | CRN Sun is looking for a few good Linux men and women. The company will fire up a new iForce program for Linux solution providers. Penguin partners will help get Sun's LX50 Linux-based server battle-ready for the war on Wintel. Sun is also recruiting Windows NT solution providers that want to check out what Sun calls "a more secure environment with Linux or Solaris." Solaris already provides the "ptree" command for this in the /usr/proc/bin directory. Here are some examples of how the command works. Tell us the ghastliest, most heinous mistake you've made and how you fixed it -- or tell us how you inherited a horror story and gave it a happy ending. When the question of pop-up proliferation popped up at Nielsen/NetRatings, researchers found that 80% of the 11 billion irritating, virtual buttinskies come from just 63 companies. And you might find this hard to believe, but pop-ups account for only 2% of the total online ad market, although they sure know how to create the illusion of unbridled ubiquity. So what company is the king of pop-up? Nielsen/NetRatings says "pop honors" go to X10 Wireless, a company that sells small Web cameras. X10 has unleashed more than one billion of the wee windows so far this year.
