SUN BUILDING CHIP FOR MORE SPEED | CNET Sun's swankiest microprocessor will get the spotlight this week at the SunNetwork 2002 conference in San Francisco. The 1.2GHz UltraSparc III is a small chip that eats less power (53 watts) than previous chips but still clocks an impressive speed. It should be ready to ship within four months. SLAPPER WORM EXPLOITS OPENSSL HOLE | SearchSecurity.com The Linux.Slapper worm is moving through Apache Web servers that are running on Linux and still have not been patched for an OpenSSL vulnerability detailed in August. The451 believes that Web services start-ups Systinet and AmberPoint, founded by former Sun executives, could be too attractive for Sun to resist acquiring. BRISTOL RELEASES WINDOWS/UNIX CROSS PLATFORM SOFTWARE | eWEEK Bristol Technology has released some software for Windows and Unix. The company's Wind/U 5.0 lets software developers use a single source code base for porting Windows applications to Unix. Version 5.0 includes updates to HP-UX, AIX, Solaris and Red Hat Linux. IBM PRESSURES SUN TO FREE JAVA | ZDNet Though many people define it in many ways, Java is made up of more than 190 different specifications called Java Specification Requests (JSRs) that are ultimately controlled by Sun. According to one observer, IBM wants to wrest control of Java away from Sun and subsequently turn it into an open-source standard.
