THE DAWN OF N1 -- SUN'S SHINE ON DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING | InfoWorld
Sun's recently-revealed N1 distributed computing architecture: Right
now you can see it, but you really can't touch it. It's more of a
vision at this stage, and Sun sees it as the answer for companies
that want to manage groups of computers and networks as a single
system. One Gartner analyst likes the N1 idea but cautions that it
must work with Windows to be successful.

SUN SHINES ON SECURITY | eWEEK
Sun has some new deadbolts for the door. The company has announced a
sweeping, new security initiative. Among the components: the iForce
Perimeter Security solution, which packs intrusion detection, virus
protection, and software from Sun's many partners, including
Symantec. The iForce Secure Web Server is also part of the
initiative, along with a new, more secure network architecture called
SuperNets.

FEASTING ON THE SPOILS OF WEBGAIN | InfoWorld
Hoping to turn WebGain's loss into its (Web)gain, Borland this week
will announce plans to convert VisualCafe and WebGain Studio tools
users over to Borland's own JBuilder Java tool. Oracle wants some of
the WebGain spoils too --it's offering a free toolkit to move
VisualCafe users to the Oracle9i JDeveloper platform.

SUN RELEASES LIBERTY ALLIANCE TOOL | CNET
Sun has drawn a new tool from its shed of open-source software
development technologies. The Java-based tool (free and downloadable
from Sun's Web site) should help businesses start testing and
building online ID systems according to the new Liberty Alliance
standard. The Liberty Alliance is a Sun-backed effort to provide an
alternative to Microsoft's Passport authentication engine.

SERVICES DEAL BOLSTERS HP'S MULTI-VENDOR EXPERTISE | SearchHP.com
Hewlett-Packard scored a $1.5 billion outsourcing deal to service
Canada's leading financial services company, Canadian Imperial Bank
of Commerce (CIBC). It also acquired CIBC's interest in an
outsourcing venture that brings more than 1,200 service professionals
skilled in multiple technologies to HP's stable.

THE MISSING LINK | Surfing for news a popular killer of time

Wanna kill some time without getting into trouble? Click on some news
sites. The chances are pretty good you won't get called on the office
carpet. A new survey of workplace Net surfing habits shows that most
employers don't get too worked up if their cubicle-dwelling
underlings use the office Internet connection to bone up on current
events. Understandably, only 2% of the survey respondents said that
the boss allowed them to visit porn or gambling sites on company
time. News sites actually beat out porn, gambling and shopping sites
as the most popular places to click, with 23% of respondents saying
they're actually addicted to news surfing. (Reuters)
