The company has unveiled its new Enterprise Continuity program, a collection of technology and services designed to prevent network failure by separating computers that work together in a unified cluster. JAVA MAKES ROOM FOR OPEN-SOURCE | eWeek The Java Community Process agreements have changed and become more open to open-source. Starting Tuesday, Java licenses must "provide for the possibility of a clean-room implementation" and offer a free test suite apart from the reference implementation. With the change, non-profits will be able to compete in developing open-source versions of every Java technology. IT EXECS: .NET NEEDS CORBA FOR J2EE INTEROPERATION | vnunet Web services is still long on hype and short on substance, according to IT execs at Borland's BorCon conference in London. Those execs see enterprises using both J2EE and .NET in the future, but, they said, .NET needs to come with Common Object Request Broker Architecture (Corba). A Microsoft official said an independent software vendor probably needs to make that move. SAS STAYS THE COURSE WITH SOLARIS 9 | ServerWatch SAS, a business-intelligence software and service provider, has affirmed its allegiance to Sun's Solaris 9 operating system. SAS and Sun have been working since January to improve SAS performance in Solaris 9. LUCENT'S VITALNET 9.0 OPENS ARMS TO SOLARIS | TechWeb Lucent's VitalNet 9.0, a fresh version of its network-management software, now comes in a Solaris version. VitalNet 9.0 uses the Solaris OS with Oracle Enterprise Database Platform to show the status of more than 10 million network ports. SUN CTO: BIGGEST DOESN'T EQUAL BEST IN CHIP WORLD | CRN Sun CTO Greg Papadopoulos says the most powerful processors aren't necessarily the best choices. In fact, he recently told a reporter that the wave of the future could be "smaller, cheaper, not-quite-as-good [64-bit] processors assembled into a system that is much more cost-effective."
