Dell slammed Unix and proclaimed that Linux is the "better Unix." Dell also slammed vendors for selling proprietary hardware systems that "lock you in" -- and he singled out Sun for being too slow and too costly. ORACLE SUBMITS JAVA SPEC. | Computerworld Oracle is putting its spin on Java's evolution with a new API spec. The company has proffered to the Java Community Process a standards-based way for various vendors to get their Java development tools to work together. Sun has given the measure a thumbs-up. One analyst said that Oracle is basically being a peacemaker between Sun and IBM. The JCP executive committee will vote on the standard in a couple of weeks. JNBRIDGEPRO NOW ENABLES CALLS FROM JAVA TO .NET | ebizQ JNBridge LLC has released a new version of JNBridgePro, its Java/.NET interoperability tool for software developers that enables the calling of Java classes from .NET as if Java were a .NET-supported language. The new release supports J2SE or J2EE and several popular J2EE application servers, allowing .NET code to access J2EE facilities such as EJBs and JNDI. .NET HAULS IN WEB SERVICES - BEHIND J2EE | Australian IT Web services are being deployed by half of large Australian companies, according to research that puts Microsoft's .NET platform firmly in second place behind J2EE projects. A survey by Taylor Nelson Sofres of 150 companies with revenue of more than $40 million finds that 47% have started projects and another 17% are "evaluating opportunities." GARTNER: SUN NOT AN IT BIG THREE | ZDNet At the recent "Cannes Geek Festival" in France, Gartner analysts declared who will rule the kingdoms of IT, and Sun is barely ONE of them. IBM, Oracle and Microsoft will rule the software and business infrastructure kingdoms, with Sun barely holding onto its smaller portion of that market. Dell, HP and IBM will rule hardware. As far as applications go, PeopleSoft, SAP and Siebel are the big three. Gartner thinks that Sun and BEA are two software companies with softer underbellies -- they may have trouble keeping their current positions. And when one man felt it, he got fired up and took matters into his own hands. Or in this case, his own barbecue tongs. Don't try this at home.
