FEATURED SECURITY TIP | Protect important directories

All system administrators know that 'rm' is a critical command. One
can alias this command as 'rm -i' which makes file removing
interactive. But this may not be true on all the systems where you
work. Here is another way to protect your important directories form
the havoc of the 'rm *' command.

SUN'S N1 TO APPEAR FIRST ON BLADE SERVERS | InfoWorld
Sun customers will get their first look at the new N1 hardware and
software management technology on new blade servers expected to be
released in the first quarter of 2003. Sun will retool software from
the recently-purchased Terraspring to form the N1 Control Plane,
which will serve as a management portal that looks out over servers,
storage components, switches and software in a network. The N1
Control Plane will eventually be included with many hardware
packages, but first on Sun's new blade servers.

BEA PARTNERS TO EXPAND JAVA COMPONENT MARKET | IDG News
The push is on to expand the market for reusable Java components. BEA
Systems, an application server vendor, has partnered with
ComponentSource, an online software exchange, in order to make sales
of prewritten Java components more competitive with rival
technologies from Microsoft. Java components are purchased by
application developers so they can save time and money when working
on big projects. Officials at BEA Systems and ComponentSource hope
the business pact will help to grow the market for such Java
components.

IBM DENIES RATIONAL BUY IS .NET LURE | ZDNet
Some analysts in the U.S. claim IBM's planned purchase of Rational
Software is $3 billion worth of bait to lure away .NET developers,
but IBM Australia's general manager has denied that claim, saying
customers should use the platforms they want.

HP INTEGRATES PRE-MERGER SERVICE PROVIDER CERT PROGRAMS
Hewlett-Packard's new Service Provider Certification program rolled
out this morning. It combines the pre-merger programs from HP and
Compaq and gives enterprise customers considering an outsourcer some
indication of the quality of service the provider delivers.

LINUX: IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, JOIN 'EM? | Reuters
In what could be a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" scenario,
Microsoft will roll out Linux software in 2004. That's the prediction
from META Group, which thinks the pervasiveness of Linux will be
impossible for even MS to ignore. Analysts think that the move will
eventually include SQL Server, IIS and Exchange. META also thinks
that Microsoft will tweak pricing on its Windows server OS to better
compete against open-source.
