Ever get an error message when trying to boot up Solaris from a CDROM? In this tip, Sun Microsystems' own security expert, Mark Thacker, explains a number of problems that can cause this sort of trouble. >> For the complete tip, CLICK: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid12_cid508354_tax286950,00.html >> To pose your own question to one of the SearchSolaris.com site experts, or to read some of their answers to previous questions, CLICK: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/ateExperts/0,289622,sid12,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SOLARIS AND INDUSTRY NEWS The headlines below and others are available on our news page. >> Full Stories: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/news/ ORACLE SEEKS TO ALIGN ECLIPSE WITH SUN'S JAVA | Computerwire The Eclipse story takes a different turn each week, it seems, and today it's IBM's turn to make news by saying it will encourage other board members to embrace Sun's view of Java. Currently Eclipse, which is dedicated to a framework and IDEs for Java, relies on the Java Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT) while Sun, and a majority of Java vendors, use the rival Swing toolkit. DATABASES GET JAVA BOOST | InfoWorld Databases will be speaking more fluent Java. A new Java Data Objects tool from SolarMetric, Kodo 2.4.0, has plug-ins that allow it to work with any development environment, including Sun ONE. Kodo gives access to relational databases through the JDO standard, nullifying the need to know SQL or to be an expert in relational databases. CAN .NET AND JAVA BE FRIENDS? | CIN New technologies are bridging the gap between Java and .NET, raising hopes that the two might be compatible someday. From Web services to tools that let .NET run on anything from Linux to IBM mainframes, companies are finding ways to pair the competitors in ways that work for them. SUN, DELL, IBM EXPECTED TO STRIKE UP THE INFINIBAND Sun, IBM and Dell this week are expected to release some information on their I/O bus InfiniBand plans. Analysts say these big companies need to take charge of InfiniBand (a technology they developed four years ago along with Intel and HP) because the start-ups charged with delivering the products just don't have the power to create a market for them. Sun will use InfiniBand for storage, servers, applications, switches, blade servers and the Sun ONE environment. (Network World Fusion) HP TO PROVIDE CERTIFICATION ROAD MAPS IN FEBRUARY | SearchHP.com Hewlett-Packard told SearchHP.com recently that it will have road maps ready in February for HP-certified professionals in technology areas that were consolidated as a result of the acquisition of Compaq. Users, however, say that it's experience that matters most with employers. http://searchhp.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid6_gci869698,00.html SUN SITE SHUTS DOWN | The Register Say farewell to Sun's Dot-Com Builder Web site. The company that "put the 'dot' in 'dot-com'" is putting it out to the virtual pasture on December 23, and the contents will be spread out among other Sun developer sites. This is kinda like the last word on the dot-com downfall. The headlines above and others are available on our news page. >> Full Stories: http://searchsolaris.techtarget.com/news/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SEARCHSOLARIS.COM FEATURED TOPIC | Got Solaris questions? I'm having a problem convincing door threads that are idle to terminate after a specified period of time, and want to know how to do this or work around it in a clean way." >> Can you help this fellow sysadmin? Yep, something smells rotten in the state of Washington, and the FBI thinks it has found the source of the stench. Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Daniel Feussner, who headed a .NET project, and charged him with pilfering some $9 million worth of Windows. He allegedly used Microsoft's internal purchase orders to buy high-end server software, then sold it on the street and kept the cash. Feussner was livin' large and even hosted a Web site to show off the spoils of his "Windows outlet" operation. Now he could spend up to 75 years in prison and pay more than $1 million in fines.
